VW Amarok Dashboard Lights Guide
By now, most drivers are used to the lights and symbols on a vehicle’s dashboard. It’s especially easy to figure out what they mean when you’ve owned the same model for many, many years. But what if you’ve just purchased a VW Amarok – whether brand new or second-hand – and you’ve never owned one before?
Whether you’ve picked up the Amarok Life, Style, PanAmericana or Aventura model, it’s a popular 4×4. And while some of the dashboard lights may be universal across Volkswagen’s vehicles, there are always some subtle differences to be aware of.
At Moot 4×4, we want to help you get the best from your drive, which is why we’ve created our VW Amarok dashboard lights guide. We’ll break these down by red, yellow and green lights, but we always recommend checking your vehicle manual if you need further info on what the lights mean.
Battery Fault
This is a simplified battery icon with a plus and minus symbol inside. If this red light appears, it means there is an issue with the battery charging system.
AdBlue Issue
This symbol of a bottle, with liquid pouring out from it, means there is either an issue with the AdBlue system or not enough AdBlue. A red light will appear and will likely prevent you from starting the engine.
Coolant Issue
If a red light showing a simple thermometer sitting in wavy lines appears, it means there is an issue with your coolant. Either there is not enough coolant or the temperature of the coolant is too high.
Handbrake Error
A red ‘P’ letter within a circle, struck out with a diagonal line, means that there is an issue or error with your parking brake. Inspect your manual or seek the assistance of a mechanic to fix this.
Bonnet Open
A simplified car symbol, with the bonnet sticking up at the front. This red light means that the bonnet or hood is open. It may be a case of shutting the bonnet fully by opening and closing it again firmly, but the light may stay on if there is an issue with the closing mechanism.
Handbrake Applied
A red light showing a circle with an exclamation mark inside means your handbrake is applied. However, it could also signal an ABS malfunction or low brake fluid. Always check your manual and consult a mechanic if you’re unsure why this light stays on when your handbrake is not applied.
Airbag Issue
This is a yellow symbol showing a person sitting with a seatbelt on, plus a large yellow ball ahead of them. This means there is an issue with the airbag in your VW Amarok. It could be that the seat belt is faulty or that the airbags have been deactivated.
Low Tyre Pressure
This yellow dashboard light, showing a bulging tyre with an exclamation mark inside, is a warning that your tyre pressure is too low. If you have increased the tyre pressure and this light persists, you may have a slow puncture or there may be a connection issue.
Antilock Braking System Issue
The letters ABS appearing in yellow means that there has been a malfunction with the antilock braking system. This could be an issue with the sensors or the brake fluid level may need addressing to turn this light off.
Low Oil Levels
A yellow light showing an oil can with a drip coming from the spout, along with a jagged line underneath, indicates that the oil levels in your VW Amarok are too low. If you know you have topped up your oil and the light still appears, it could be a fault that requires a service from a mechanic.
Low Washer Fluid
This symbol is a simplified icon of a windscreen with liquid in the middle and a fountain spouting from the top. If this appears in yellow, it means your washer fluid is low and requires a top-up.
Bulb Failure
Appearing in yellow, this circle with small dashes around it may look a little like the sun; however, it means there is a bulb issue on your Amarok. This means you’ll need to check your headlights and brake lights are all working, with replacement bulbs likely to be needed.
Low Fuel Warning
A yellow light showing a traditional petrol station fuel pump means that you’re low on fuel. You should stop at the next available fuel forecourt to fill up if you see this warning (usually combined with an audible warning).
Daytime Running Lights
The letters DRL appearing in a green light on your VW Amarok dashboard means that your daytime lights are on. This is an automatic feature built into most cars and there is nothing you need to do.
Shift Lock
A shoe symbol in a circle, lighting up in green, means that you need to apply the brake to put the VW Amarok into gear.
